Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Jerome Walcott travelled to Buenos Aires this week for a bilateral working meeting with his Argentinian counterpart, Jorge Faurie.

The working meeting, the first at this level in 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, was held at ‘Quinta de Olivos’, the official residence of Argentina President Mauricio Macri, and was described by the parties as “productive and friendly”.

During the encounter, the foreign ministers discussed issues of mutual interest, both bilateral and regional, and looked over the robust joint cooperation agenda put in place to develop capabilities in various key areas identified by both countries.

Also in attendance was Ambassador of Argentina to Barbados, Gustavo Martinez Pandiani, who assisted Minister Walcott during the high-level visit. Joining the delegation were Ambassador of Barbados to Brazil, Tonika Sealy-Thompson, and the representative of the Barbados Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Kareeta Whyte.

Throughout their stay in Buenos Aires, the Barbadian delegation also attended the 2nd High-Level United Nations Conference for South-South Cooperation, a high-level summit organised by the Argentina Government and the United Nations, with the goal of promoting technical cooperation between developing countries and revising the trends on the subjects of South-South and triangular cooperation.

In the framework of the summit, Minister Walcott and Ambassador Pandiani led the discussions of a seminar, ‘Strengthening International Cooperation with the Caribbean Community’, where representatives of CARICOM member states exchanged experiences, aiming to better implement the 2030 Agenda.

Minister Walcott’s visit to Argentina took place after an intense year of bilateral relations between Barbados and the South American country, in which two cooperation agreements were signed and several cooperation projects were launched in areas such as fishing waste, agriculture, Spanish teaching, SMEs, and sports development, capped by the trip of the Barbados Under-17 national football team to train in Buenos Aires last December.
